Scope and Content Note From the Collection:

The collection includes letters primarily written by members of the Towell family, Samuel Towell's certificate of registry for land in Clarksville, Arkansas, and one photograph (tintype). The letters pertain to early Arkansas, the Civil War, and the California Gold Rush. The tintype is of Nancy Atkins Towell, wife of Samuel Towell. Samuel and Nancy Towell had three sons: John H., William, and Isaac.

The letters mainly pertain to R. S. Biggers's behind-the-scenes political activities: letters requesting his help in getting people jobs and letters he wrote to Wilbur D. Mills, Hattie W. Caraway, and John E. Miller, recommending people for jobs. Unless otherwise noted, it should be assumed that R. S. Biggers' location was Hardy, Arkansas.

Lucky family were donated to Special Collections by Mrs. Carl Lucky, Sr. (Virginia Wells Lucky), Mrs. Carl Lucky, Jr, (Jane Sanders Lucky), and Mr. Carl Lucky, Jr., of McGehee, Arkansas, 15 November 1985. The original papers are owned by the donors of the photocopies. Most of the material originated with Lucinda G. Camp from Wileyville, Desha County (now probably Florence, Drew County), Arkansas, to his sister-in-law, Cornelia Camp, and to his brother, William C. Camp, in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
