Scope and Content Note The papers pertain primarily to Arthur Nelson Peters (Jay Hale's grandfather) and his business, the Ball and Peters Railroad and General Contractors Company of Little Rock. Scope and Content Note Series 1 contains 33 items of correspondence. Twenty of the 24 letters dated 1857-1898 are to James Albert Buchanan, and pertain to land, familial, and other affairs of the Buchanan family of Washington County, Ark., especially to the role of County Surveyor J. A. Buchanan in work performed 1880-1881 for railroads under construction in the vicinity.
