Scope and Content Note

Series 1 contains 33 items of correspondence. Twenty of the 24 letters dated 1857-1898 are to James Albert Buchanan, and pertain to land, familial, and other affairs of the Buchanan family of Washington County, Ark., especially to the role of County Surveyor J. A. Buchanan in work performed 1880-1881 for railroads under construction in the vicinity. Nine letters dated 1928-1929 pertain to Herbert Earle Buchanan's candidacy for presidency of Washington and Lee University; correspondencents include William McFaddin Alexander, Marcus Lafayette Bell, Henry Donald Campbell, John William Davis, George Wesley Drake, George DeMatt Henderson, and William Taliaferro Thompson.

Series 2 contains 21 documents pertaining to Buchanan family's purchase and sale of lands in Washington County, Ark. Series 3 contains 6 diplomas and a certificate.

Biographical Note

Herbert Earle Buchanan (1881-1973) was descended from early settlers of Cane Hill, Washington County.

The Herbert Earle Buchanan Family Papers were donated to the Special Collections Department by Dr. H. E. Buchanan of Prairie Gove, Arkansas, through Prof. Ernie C. Deane in February, 1971.
