Biographical / Historical

The Little Rock Air Force Base Elementary School in Jacksonville, Arkansas served the children of military personnel living on the adjacent Air Force Base. The school, which opened in September 1958, was a part of the Pulaski County School District. The school was integrated in September 1959, ahead of other schools in the district, due to the intervention of the Department of Defense. During the 1962-63 school year documented in this collection, it was one of only three integrated schools in the district; Black students attending the other schools, Jacksonville Junior High School and Jacksonville Senior High School, were also residents of the Little Rock Air Force Base.
