Content Description

The collection includes a scrapbook album containing photographs related to the Frost-Trigg Lumber Company, as well as a pamphlet titled "1907 Catalogue of Photographs of the Frost-Trigg Lumber Company for Special Album Presented to Mrs. Ben Collins by R. D. Collins" that includes captions for the images included in the scrapbook. Inscribed on the cover is the message "To Mrs. Ben Collins from R.D. Collins"; R.D. Collins was assistant general manager for the Frost-Trigg Lumber Company's Shreveport office, and Mrs. Ben Collins was his aunt. Also included is a loose photograph of a man and woman, possibly Mr. and Mrs. Ben Collins.

Photographs in the album depict scenes related to the De Soto Land & Lumber Co. in Mansfield, Lousiana; the Noble Lumber Company in Noble, Louisiana; The Red River Lumber Co. in Frostville, Arkansas; the Black Lake Lumber Co. in Campti, Louisiana; the Union Saw Mill Co. in Huttig, Arkansas; and the Frost-Trigg Lumber Co. offices and E.A. Frost's home in Shreveport, Lousiana.

Five photographs relate to the Red River Lumber Co.: #144, "The saw mill of the Red River Lbr. Co. from the log dump, looking S.W."; #148, "Birdseye view of the lumber yard of the Red River Lumber Co."; #167, "Cutting down an average quality shortleaf tree in the woods of the Red River Lbr. Co."; #169, "Skidding logs with 8-ox teams"; and #173, "Group of all the men employed in the woods of the Red River Lbr. Co."

Five photographs relate to the Union Saw Mill Co.: #228, "Exterior view of saw mill No. 2 at Huttig, taken from the N. E."; #229, "Exterior view of Union Hotel, Huttig, Ark."; #232, "Depot, locomotive No. 8, La. & Pine Bluff Ry. with combination passenger coach, baggage, express and mail, at Huttig, Ark."; #233, "Photographic tower 128 feet high erected for the use of the American Lumberman in making a birds-eye view of the complete plant of the Union Saw Mill Co. at Huttig, 400 feet north of saw mill No. 2 S. V. Streator, chief staff artist, on top with J. H. McClure and construction crew on the ladder, and about the bottom Bolling Arthur Johnson, General Staff Representative of the A.L. and party. The highest photographic tower ever erected south of the Ohio river. Taken Friday, Feb. 15, 1907.", and #234, "Birdseye view of the entire manufacturing plant of the Union Saw Mill Co. with white residence portion of Huttig, also business section. Taken Feb. 15, 1907."

Biographical / Historical

The Frost-Trigg Lumber Company was founded in Missouri in 1897; its first president was Enoch W. Frost of Arkansas. Among its holdings were the Union Saw Mill Co., incorporated in Huttig, Arkansas in 1902, and the Black Lake Lumber Company, incoporated in Campti, Louisiana in 1906. In 1903, the company opened offices in Shreveport, Louisiana. In 1907, the company became known as the Frost-Johnson Lumber Company; in 1925, its name changed to Frost Lumber Industries, Incorporated. In 1952, Frost Lumber merged with Olin Industries, and formed the Forest Products Division of Olin.

A loose photograph found at the front of the album has been moved to Folder 1. The scrapbook is in its original order; album order does not correspond to the order in which photographs are listed in the 1907 catalog.

The Frost-Trigg Lumber Company Scrapbook was purchased by Special Collections from McBride Rare Books of Dobbs Ferry, New York on April 10, 2024.
