Scope and Contents

The collection contains two manuscript scores of Florence Price's Moods, for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano; one is a full score, and the other is the piano part. The inner cover of the full score is inscribed “To Lillian Poenisch, with my high esteem for her writing. Florence B. Price.”

Biographical / Historical

Florence Beatrice Smith Price (1887-1953) was born April 9, 1887 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She studied composition and organ at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and afterwards taught in the music departments at Shorter College in Arkansas (1906-1910), and Clark University in Georgia (1910-1912). Among her most famous compositions is the Symphony in E Minor which won the Wanamaker Prize in 1931. Price died on June 3, 1953 of a stroke in Chicago, Illinois.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Florence Price Moods, for Flute, Clarinet, and Piano Scores were donated to Special Collections by Dr. Paul Kratoska of Chicago, Illinois on November 28, 2023. Kratoksa found the materials in a Chicago apartment he purchased that had previously belonged to clarinetist Casja Ilo.
