Content Description

The collection contains materials, primarily published and unpublished sheet music, created and collected by composer Florence Price. Also included are a memo book, course notes, and a course notebook that belonged to Price; thirteen family photographs; and a manuscript draft of a novel, Maudelle: A Novel Founded on Facts Gathered from Living Witnesses, written by Price's father, James H. Smith.

Biographical / Historical

Florence Beatrice Smith Price (1887-1953) was born April 9, 1887 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She studied composition and organ at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston and afterwards taught in the music departments at Shorter College in Arkansas (1906-1910), and Clark University in Georgia (1910-1912). Among her most famous compositions is the Symphony in E Minor which won the Wanamaker Prize in 1931. Price died on June 3, 1953 of a stroke in Chicago, Illinois.

Arrangement

Materials are arranged by format and by topic; sheet music by Price is arranged alphabetically by title. Labels on the packaging in which materials were originally received have been removed from the original plastic sleeves, adhered to acid-free paper, and inserted at the front of the folder containing the related material, when applicable.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Florence Price Collection was purchased by the University of Arkansas Libraries from Pamela Basu of Pembroke Township, Illinois, on October 26, 2022. Basu had purchased the materials at a tag sale in Illinois.
