Biographical / Historical

George Herbert Gunn earned a bachelor's degree from Rhodes College in 1976 and a master's degree in history from the University of Arkansas in 1982. Based on research conducted for his master's thesis, he published an article in Vol. 83, No. 4 (Autumn 1984) of The South Atlantic Quarterly, "The Continuing Friendship of James William Fulbright and Ronald Buchanan McCallum." Gunn went on to work with Witness for Peace in Nicaragua; as director of the Michigan Interfaith Committee on Central American Human Rights in Detroit; as director of communications for the CREDO Institute in Memphis; and as College for Seniors Program Manager at UNC-Asheville, among other roles.

The George Herbert Gunn Materials Related to J. William Fulbright were donated to Special Collections by George Herbert Gunn of Arden, North Carolina on December 3, 2023. Arden created and acquired these materials while conducting research on Fulbright while a master's student in the University of Arkansas history department, and in relation to his subsequent published article about Fulbright.
