Content Description

The collection consists of photographic slides of birds, primarily taken by Arkansas birder Max Parker. Most slides are labeled with bird species, location, and date. Locations are from across North and Central America, but with a focus on Arkansas and the United States. Two slides are of images taken by others: Box 2, Folder 14, Image 109 is by Charles Mills, and Box 3, Folder 16, Image 81 was published by the Big Bend Natural History Association.

Arkansas locations identified include DeGray Lake, Greers Ferry Lake, Lake Catherine State Park, Beaver Lake, Lake Dardanelle, Millwood Lake, the Charlie Craig State Fish Hatchery in Centerton, the Andrew Hulsey State Fish Hatchery in Hot Springs, Mena Lake, the Felsenthal National Wildlife Refuge Oakwood Unit, Magness Lake, Arkadelphia, Bella Vista, Holla Bend National Wildlife Refuge, Lake Atalanta, Bull Shoals Lake, Malvern, Helena, Newton County, the Stuttgart Airport, Highfill, and Warren Prairie.

Biographical / Historical

Max Darrel Parker (1925-2008) was an avid birder and photographer who served as curator for the Arkansas Audubon Society’s Arkansas Bird Records Committee from 1986-2007.

Parker was born to Worthington W. and Linnie Ann Laub Parker on January 29, 1925, in Allen County, Indiana. During World War II, he served in the Marines; he then earned a degree in forestry from Purdue University and went on to work for 35 years as a forester with the International Paper Company in Arkansas. He passed away January 1, 2008.

Arrangement

Materials are arranged in the creator's original order, although they have been rehoused from their original containers for preservation reasons. Materials were received stored in nine metal slide boxes and two plastic slide carousels; within each container, slides were arranged by species, although some species are represented in multiple containers.

Slides in Box 1, Folders 1-4 were originally stored in a metal slide box labeled "1." Slides in Box 1, Folders 5-8 were stored in box 2. Slides in Box 2, Folders 1-4 were stored in box 3. Slides in Box 2, Folders 5-10 were stored in box 4. Slides in Box 2, Folders 11-16 were stored in box 5. Slides in Box 3, Folders 1-5 were stored in an unlabeled slide box. Slides in Box 3, Folders 6-10 were stored in a slide box labeled "X." Slides in Box 3, Folders 11-13 were stored in a slide box labeled "X2." Slides in Box 3, Folder 14 were stored in a slide box labeled "XX." Slides in Box 3, Folder 15 were stored in a slide carousel, and Slides in Box 3, Folder 16 were stored in a second slide carousel.

Immediate Source of Acquisition

The Max Parker Photographic Slides were donated to Special Collections by Joseph C. Neal of Fayetteville, Arkansas on October 16, 2023. The slides were given to Neal by fellow Arkansas birder Barry Haas; Haas was given the slides by Parker's son, Joe Parker.
