Scope and Content Note
Transcripts of interviews conducted by Bernard M. Gwertzman and Haynes Johnson with J. William Fulbright in his Washington, D.C. congressional office in 1966 as research for their 1968 book, Fulbright, the Dissenter. Topics include Fulbright's family; President Lyndon B. Johnson; Fulbright's time at Oxford and at the University of Arkansas; Fulbright's service in Congress, and his thoughts on several of his colleagues; and the Vietnam War.

Biographical Note
J. William Fulbright (1905-1995) was a president of the University of Arkansas (1939-1941), a U.S. Representative (1943-1945), a U.S. Senator (1945-1974), the longest-serving chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee (1959-1975), a champion of the establishment of international exchange programs, and author of numerous books and articles, including The Arrogance of Power (1966).
