This collection contains correspondence, memoranda, clippings, campaign materials, congressional records, notebooks and other records created or received by Norvill Jones. Topics include the Tonkin Gulf Incidents, the Vietnam War, U.S.-China relations, and the senatorial campaigns of J. William Fulbright. Notable correspondents include J. William Fulbright, Senator Mike Mansfied (D-Montana), and Senator Frank Church (D-Idaho).

Although some photocopied documents pertaining to the Tonkin Gulf Incidents are marked “confidential” or “secret,” other markings on the copies, which appear to have been acquired as part of FOIA requests, indicate that they are all declassified. Anyone with alternative knowledge should alert Special Collections.
Biographical Note
Norvill Jones (1929-2015) was a staff member of the United States Senate Committee on Foreign Relations for over twenty years, eventually serving as the chief of staff from 1977 to 1979. He came to Washington, D.C. at the age of 15 to work for Senator J. William Fulbright of Arkansas. He served four years in the U.S. Navy as a helicopter pilot and graduated from George Washington University Law School. After retiring from the Senate Foreign Relations Committee staff, Jones spent time working in governmental relations for Reynolds Metals Company until his retirement in 1985.
