Scope and Content Note
Constituent, official, and personal correspondence, memoranda, legislative bills and other records pertaining primarily to the governmental, political, and diplomatic activities and interests, and incidentally to other aspects of the life, of the U.S, Senator from Arkansas, 1945-1975, who was Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee from 1959 to 1975. Persons, programs, activities, organizations, and issues to which most of the material relates include: Joseph Raymond McCarthy; the International Educational Exchange Program; Fulbright’s election campaigns, the Democratic party, and political activities and issues in Arkansas and in the nation; patronage appointments and federally funded programs in Arkansas; U.S. foreign relations and military affairs; Congressional legislation and the work of U.S. Senate Committees; Fulbright’s relationships with federal executive agencies and with his constituents. A few files relate to Fulbright’s personal and familial activities and concerns or pertain to his term of office, 1943-1945, as U.S. Representative from Arkansas.
