Negative microfilm copies of letters sent to Granville Whittington of Boston, Massachusetts, from his father William, sister Irene, and brother, Hiram Abiff Whittington, a printer who emigrated to Arkansas Territory in 1826. Persons mentioned in the letters include William E. Woodruff, Robert Crittenden, and Cephas Washburn. Places from which the letters were written include Cohassett, Nantucket, and Boston, Massachusetts; and Little Rock and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Scope and Content Note The Hiram A. and Granville Whittington Materials contain correspondence between Hiram and his brother, Granville, back in Massachusetts revealing the conditions and his experience in the new Arkansas territory. Granville, a book binder by trade, preserved the letters in a bound volume. These letters that were neatly bound were found in Granville’s attic when his house in Mount Ida was torn down in 1913.
