William Jefferson Hamilton Daybook and Memoirs

Material pertaining to the life of William J. Hamilton, Arkansas student, teacher, lawyer, and merchant, especially to his years as a student at Arkansas Industrial University, 1889-1894. The memoirs also relate, in part, to the history of Hartford, Arkansas, to Hamilton's daughter, Nell Lucille Hamilton Trotter, and to other members of the Hamilton-Gryder-York-Dean-Trotter families.

James Mitchell Letter

Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of one item, a letter written by James Mitchell on November 27, 1874. It is written by hand on a folded sheet of stationery bearing a lithograph in green depicting University Hall, the building housing the Arkansas Industrial University. In the letter Mitchell addresses David Walker, a prominent judge, asking Walker to use his influence with the Arkansas General Assembly to obtain a sufficient appropriation to operate the new University.
