Scope and Content Note

The papers contain correspondence; financial and professional records; bank ledgers; appointment and address books; diplomas, certificates, awards, and plaques; photographs; a scrapbook; twelve black and white reproductions on silk by Italian artist Oscar D'Amico, and other materials and records pertaining to Rabie Rhodes' personal life, business affairs, and professional and civic activities. Notable correspondents include: Dale Bumpers, William Jefferson Clinton, Orval Faubus, J. William Fulbright, John P. Hammerschmidt, Hubert Humphrey, John F. Kennedy, John L. McClellan, Sidney McMath, Wilbur D. Mills, David Pryor, Winthrop Rockefeller, and many others.

Biographical Note

Rabie Guthrie Rhodes, a prominent Harrison, Arkansas, businessman and civic leader, was born on February 27, 1901 at Van Buren in Crawford County, Arkansas. He attended public schools at Mulberry, Arkansas, and continued his studies at Tampa University and at Louisiana State University School of Banking in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. He married Syble Campbell of Van Buren, Arkansas, on May 25, 1933 and had two daughters: Mary Olive, who married David L. Owens; and Ann Marie, who married A.J. Gornatti. After Syble's death in 1964, Rhodes married Marcella Myers Hollowell. Rabie Rhodes owned and operated the Rabie Rhodes Chevrolet Company in Harrison, Arkansas, for thirty years until September 1, 1954.

Rhodes became president and chairman of the Board of First National Bank of Harrison, Arkansas, retiring as chairman emeritus in 1986. Rhodes helped to organize the Bank Credit Life Insurance Company of Arkansas in 1955 and held the office of president and chairman of the Board. He was also a director of the United Insurance Company. Rabie Rhodes was a founder of St. John's Episcopal Church at Harrison in 1947 and received the Bishop's Cross for his church activities. He was a trustee of All Saint's Episcopal School in Vicksburg, Mississippi. Rhodes also served on the Arkansas State Board of Education for eighteen years, including seven years as a board chairman. He was a president of the Harrison School Board, chairman of the Arkansas Good Roads Association, president of the Harrison Lions Club and the Arkansas State Chamber of Commerce, a two-time president of the Harrison Chamber of Commerce, a member of the board of the Hillcrest Nursing Home for thirty years, and a member of the Rotary Club. Rhodes received during his lifetime numerous awards, certificates of appreciation, citations, and recognitions for his outstanding leadership and contributions to the comunity. Rabie Guthrie Rhodes died on October 29, 1988.

The Rabie Guthrie Rhodes Papers were donated to the Specials Collections Department by Marcella Rhodes of Harrison, Arkansas on March 9, 1989.
