Biographical Note

The Woman's Book Club of Harrison was founded in 1900 as an organization to develop and operate a library for the city of Harrison. The first library was set up by the club members in the Harrison Times newspaper office. In 1901, the Club purchased an abandoned building which they moved to a lot donated by a Club member. The members renovated the building and opened the Harrison Public Library in 1903, with the Woman's Book Club maintaining ownership and upkeep. In 1944, Harrison's public library became a Regional Library. The new library expanded in 1966 to include both the Boone County Library and the Regional Headquarters. In addition to their work with area libraries, the Woman's Book Club is a member of the American Federation of Women's Clubs and has been active in community projects, including its bookmobile program and local essay contests.
