Scope and Content Note

Materials include correspondence, by-laws, minutes, budgets, annual reports, lists of board of directors, membership lists, press releases, newsletters, newspaper clippings, photographs, video cassettes, tape cassettes, films, floppy disks, slides, proposed constitutional bills, material concerning various conferences, pamphlets, research, and other material regarding various projects undertaken by the league. This collection contains materials from the League of Women Voters of Washington County, as well as materials from the League of Women Voters of the United States, the League of Women Voters of Arkansas, and local leagues of Arkansas.

As of November 2019, the collection includes ongoing captures of the Washington County League of Women Voters' website and social media pages. These captures are scheduled by Special Collections staff using the Archive-It tool, a subscription service run by the Internet Archive that is designed to capture web content for long-term preservation. Web captures are stored as WARC files and are viewable on the collection's Archive-It page.

Biographical Note

The League of Women Voters was founded in 1920 as a nonpartisan organization to inform the electorate and increase citizen participation in government. The Washington County League of Women Voters was organized in 1920 by Mrs. H. E. Morrow, Mrs. A. M. Harding, Mrs. A. H. Markie, Mrs. J. H. Adler, Mrs. W. S. Gregson, Mrs. F. G. Baender, and Mrs. J. C. Futrall. Since the 1950s the Washington County League has sought to improve city and county government, land use planning, housing, education, voting procedures, and other items of concern. Acquisition Information

The Washington County League of Women Voters Records Addendum was donated to the Special Collections Department by League members on behalf of the organization, including Peg Anderson, Marion Orton, and Sally Kelley in February 1990 and March 1998.

Capture of the Washington County League of Women Voters' web presence was begun in 2019 with the permission of President Sarah Gheen and Webmasters Sarah Kelly-King and Beth Barham. The organization's website and Facebook page will be captured annually, and its Twitter account captured annually.
