Biographical Note

The Peterson family members are descendants of Patrick (Grimes) Graham, Sr., an Irish immigrant, who, according to the History of Butler Co., PA., (Vol. I, 1895), was the first permanent settler of Jefferson Township, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, in 1796. He had arrived in Philadelphia in 1760, and was a private in the Philadelphia Co., Pennsylvania militia during the American Revolution (according to the Pennsylvania Society Sons of the American Revolution, 1956). Daniel Graham, the third child of Patrick and Elizabeth McKee Graham, born on April 16, 1796, spent most of his life as a farmer. He married Lydia Iddings and had thirteen children. Elizabeth Graham English, daughter of Daniel Graham, was born in Butler County, Pennsylvania, on May 20, 1826. She married John Hyles English in 1846 and later (about 1870) relocated with her family to Arkansas. Emeline ("Emma") English Hilliard, great-grand daughter of Patrick Graham, Sr., was married in Washington County, Arkansas, on March 27, 1872, to William Ira Hilliard who had a flourishing brick laying business in Little Rock and Pine Bluff, Arkansas. William and Emeline moved to Jonesboro, Arkansas, around 1920, to live with their daughter, Elizabeth "Lizzie" Hilliard Peterson, her husband, Edgar Allen Peterson, Sr., and their three sons. Patricia Jane Peterson Campbell, born on December 28, 1946, granddaughter of Edgar Allen and Emma Brooks Peterson, Jr., represents the eighth generation descended from Patrick Graham, Sr.

Acquisition Information

Colonel Robert Darden Peterson of Fort Worth, Texas, donated his family papers to Special Collections on May 26, 1995. Two letters from Elizabeth Hilliard Peterson to Clifton Jones were donated by Elizabeth Hilliard Peterson's great-grandson, Robbie ter Kuile of Carrollton, Texas, on March 11, 1996. Ter Kuile received the letters from Roberta Sloan, editor of the Craighead County Historical Journal, who received the materials during the disposition of the estate of Clifton Jones Westbooke's daughter-in-law.

Processing Information

Processed by Vera Ekechukwu, Special Collections Division, University of Arkansas Libraries, Fayetteville, Arkansas, November 1995, with assistance from Patricia Peterson Campbell and Roberta Peterson ter Kuile. An additional donation from Robbie ter Kuile was incorporated into the collection (added into Box 1, Folder 18) by Katrina Windon in June 2021; at that time, several postcards that had been separated during initial collection processing for transfer to the Arkansas Picture Collection were reintegrated into the collection's correspondence subseries.
