Scope and Content Note
The material consists mainly of scrapbooks (including binders used as scrapbooks) containing newspaper clippings of articles pertaining to Funk's activities or written by him. In addition, a number of binders contain typed letters, speeches, articles, and essays, including an autobiography up to World War II. There are also a number of loose clippings, letters, articles, and Arkansas Press Association papers.

Biographical Note
Erwin Charles Funk, born January 5, 1877, was an editor and publisher in northwest Arkansas. He began his career as editor of the Manning Monitor (Iowa) in 1894, then became editor of the Springdale Democrat (Arkansas), which he had bought in partnership with his father, in 1896. Later that year they bought the Rogers Democrat, and Erwin Funk edited and published that newspaper 1897-1930. Funk then became managing editor of the Fayetteville Leader (Arkansas) until 1935. He also edited Trench and Camp, the Camp Pike (Little Rock) newspaper in 1918. He was active in the YMCA, the National Editorial Association (he was its president 1928-1929), the Arkansas Press Association, and the Rotary Club. He was the newspaper code administrator for Arkansas under the N.R.A. during the Depression. He died February 1, 1960.

Articles were pasted into the scrapbooks in only rough chronological order; Funk's written material is likewise not arranged strictly by date. Dates given for the scrapbooks and binders are only approximate.
Acquisition Information
The material was acquired by Special Collections ca. 1968-1969. Materials donated in 1969 were donated by Grace Upchurch.
