Biographical Note
The University Senate Commencement Committee was responsible for planning the commencement excecises. The first mention of the Commencement Committee in the University Catalog is in the 1903-1904 academic year.
The 22nd Winter Commencement Exercises were held on January 25, 1969. The commencement address was given by C.H. Murphy, Jr., President of the Murphy Oil Corporation in El Dorado. Charles Haywood Murphy, Jr. became the leader of his family businesses after the death of his father in 1941. The businesses included banks, a sawmill, a railroad and oil exploration. In 1946, Murphy and his siblings formed C. H. Murphy & Company. A few years later this would become the Murphy Corporation with Murphy serving as president until 1972 and chairman of the board until 1994.

Acquisition Information
The University of Arkansas University Senate Commencement Committee Meeting Minute Book was donated on December 18, 1972 by Blair Hart through G. Clark. The commencement address was donated on February 17, 1969 through William W. Hughes and the President's Office.
