The letter is written in ink on lined stationery of the Headquarters, Republican State Committee, Arkansas, dated from Little Rock, Oct. 21st, addressed to Hon. S. Fessenden in New York, and apologizes for the later return of a dispatch.

Clayton (1833-1914) was the ninth governor, the first Republican so to serve, of Arkansas and also served as U. S. Senator from Arkansas and as U. S. ambassador to Mexico.
