Biographical Note
The University Folklore Research Project (1949-1965) was supervised by Mary Celestia Parler Randolph (1904-1981). A native of Wedgefield, South Carolina, Randolph joined the English Department of the University of Arkansas in 1949. She taught courses in Chaucer, history of the English language, and folklore. As folklorist-supervisor of the University Folklore Research Project, she not only supervised student collectors but personally did much of the fieldwork, compilation, and transcriptions of folklore materials. Along with her husband Vance Randolph, Mary Celestia Parler Randolph collected, annotated, and transcribed more folklore than any other collector in the Ozark region.
