Hawn-Knight Family Papers

 Collection
Identifier: MC 756

Scope and Content Note

The papers in this collection have been divided into four series. Papers pertaining to Dr. Monroe Knight have been arranged in series one and consist of family correspondence and professional records. Series two contains papers pertaining to Alfred and Daisy Hawn. These papers include personal correspondence between husband, wife, friends, and relatives; poetry and essays written or collected by the Hawns; professional records relating to the operation of the Madison County Democrat and the Madison County Record; and miscellaneous financial, legal, and personal records. Series three consists of photographs found amidst the Hawn-Knight papers which are largely unidentified. The materials grouped in series four are business records from various Madison County enterprises that have no clear relationship to either the Hawn or Knight families. The possibility exists that Dr. Knight or Alfred Hawn may have had an interest in these businesses, but they have been retained with the collection largely because of their informational value in detailing commercial conditions in Madison County.
