Biographical Note

Harvey Jones was born in Washington County, Arkansas on August 19, 1900 on the farm of his parents, Taylor and Jimmie Jones. In 1918, while the Frisco railroads were on strike, Harvey Jones purchased a wagon and two mules, beginning the Jones Transportation Company, which serviced routes between Rogers, Springdale, and Fayetteville. A year later, in 1919, Harvey traded in the mules for a used hard-tire Federal truck. In 1933, the company changed its named to the Jones Truck Lines (JTL), which operated routes across parts of Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma, and Arkansas. The addition of refrigerated trucks and the outbreak of World War II aided the expansion of the truck lines, as Jones continued to ship wartime materials via government contracts, while other companies suffered from tire and gasoline rations. In 1949, Harvey incorporated the Jones Truck Lines, which was then the largest privately-owned trucking carrier in the country. Harvey Jones led the business from its inception until 1980, when JTL was sold to Sun Carriers. In addition to managing his company, Harvey also dedicated his time to the Springdale School Board (1943-1965), the First National Bank of Springdale board of directors, and the Springdale Memorial Hospital board of trustees.

Harvey Jones died on March 29, 1989. Ten years later, Harvey Jones was posthumously inducted into the Arkansas Business Hall of Fame.

Bernice Jones was born Bernice Irene Young on October 31, 1905 in the town of Oak Grove, Arkansas. She graduated from Springdale High School in 1924 and continued her education at the University of Arkansas, where she earned a teaching degree and went on to instruct students at the Oak Grove and Harmon schools. In 1938, after 10 years of courtship, Bernice married Harvey in Salt Lake City, Utah. Throughout their 51 year marriage, Harvey and Bernice undertook numerous philanthropic endeavors aimed at transforming the city of Springdale and other parts of Arkansas.

Together, Mr. and Mrs. Jones were responsible for keeping the Springdale school system solvent during the Great Depression, spearheading the construction of the Springdale Memorial Hospital, and providing assistance to numerous individuals and organizations through the Harvey and Bernice Jones Foundation, which the couple founded in 1957. In 1968 Harvey and Bernice built Har-Ber Village, an antique pioneer-town museum, located in Grove, Oklahoma. After the sale of the Jones Truck Lines in 1980, the couple founded the Jones Charitable Trust to support education, health, and other causes, such as the creation of the Jones Center for Families. For her dedication to philanthropy, Bernice Jones was honored by President Bill Clinton with a Presidential Service Award in 1996.

Bernice Jones died on September 10, 2003.
