Scope and Content Note

The papers pertain mostly to Richard Baker Greer and his grandfather, Benjamin Finis Greer. Benjamin Finis Greer (1867-1942) was born to James W. Greer and Mollie E. Shannon Greer in Evansville (Washington County), Arkansas. In 1889, he married Lula Flinn, another Evansville native. In addition to general agricultural pursuits, Greer worked for the Kansas City Southern Railroad in Siloam Springs, Arkansas, and Stilwell, Oklahoma. He was elected Washington County Probate Clerk in 1904 and Washington County Judge in 1908. Greer also established Greer Abstract Company with his son, James R. Greer, around 1910.

The papers contain family histories written by Benjamin Finis Greer in 1941, three collages containing photographs, newspaper clippings, and other items pertaining to Richard Baker Greer, and three photograph albums containing pictures of the James R. and Ruth Baker Greer family.

Biographical Note

Richard Baker Greer (1914- ) was born to James R. Greer and Ruth Baker Greer in Fayetteville. He graduated from Fayetteville High School in 1931 and the University of Arkansas in 1936. Like his grandfather and father, he was an abstractor and ran Greer Abstract Company until he retired in 1982. He was President of the Arkansas Land Title Association and a charter member of the Fayetteville Kiwanis Club.
