Biographical Note
Founded in 1977, the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Families dedicates itself to promoting the welfare of the children of Arkansas. Founders of the organization include Jim Miles Dr. Betty Lowe, Betty Bumpers, Hillary Rodham Clinton, Pat Lile, Dorothy Nayles, Mary Sue Jacobs, Judge Olly Neal, Dr. Bettye Caldwell, and Sharon Pallone. The organization works to reform the juvenile justice and child welfare systems. It seeks to promote children’s health with a special interest in securing insurance coverage for children. It advocates for early and out-of-school educational opportunities, including summer and after-school programs as well as remedying problems caused by racial and socio-economic factors. It also promotes economic security through reforming the tax and budget systems, seeking to protect low-income families from a regressive tax system and payday lenders.
