Nannie Stillwell Jackson was born in Fayette County, Tennessee to Abraham and Tabitha Hudson September 26, 1854. Not much is known about Nannie’s early childhood but it is believed that she grew up near Napoleon, Desha County, Arkansas. Nannie Hudson married Asher C. Stillwell, a merchant and farmer, on December 16, 1873. Thirteen years later, Asher died on August 10, 1886. Together they had three children, William A., Etta Elizabeth, and Mary Sue.

Three years after the death of her first husband, Nannie married widower, William T. Jackson, on August 1, 1889. In 1890 their first child Stonewall Jr. was born and in 1895 they welcomed the birth of their daughter Carrie M. These children are reported not to have lived to adulthood.
