Scope and Content Note

This collection contains an illustrated manuscript of An Atlas and Annotated List of Vascular Plants of Arkansas, written by Edwin B. Smith in 1978 and later hand-illustrated by Kent Bonar. The custom box for the book was created by Steve Cochran of Bound To Be Around Bindery, Mount Vernon, IN.

The collection also contains fourteen of Bonar's original field notebooks, which he used as the basis for his annotations. These notebooks feature pen-and-ink drawings of Arkansas flora and fauna.

Biographical Note

Kent Bonar has lived in Newton County since 1972, and has been illustrating the Ozark’s flora and fauna since then. He is also the chief naturalist, illustrator, and editorial contributor for the Newton County Wildlife Association. He previously worked as an Arkansas State Park Naturalist.

Acquisition Information

The Kent Bonar Materials Addendum manuscript was donated to Special Collections by Kent Bonar of Deer, AR, on June 29, 2016. The notebooks were donated by Mr. Bonar on April 19, 2017. An additional notebook (Box 2, Item 14) was donated by Bonar in November 2023.
