Scope and Content Note

The collection consists primarily of the letters of Dr. P. L, Hathcock and his fiancee, Sue R, Kelton, from February, 1901 until their marriage on November 10, 1902. There are also letters from brief periods of absences during 1906, 1907, and 1931. Other correspondents include Dr. Hathcock's mother and sister, Mrs. Alfred M. Hathcock and Rosa Hathcock; Mrs. Sue Kelton Hathcock's parents, John H. and Mary Hust Kelton; and other relatives and close friends. The collection also contains two handwritten manuscripts by Dr. Hathcock; and Dr. Hathcock's Washington County property tax and poll tax receipts for 1906 and 1907.

Biographical Note

Dr. P. L. Hathcock, the son of Dr. Alfred M. and Mary Allen Hathcock, was born December 31, 1878 in Independence County. Dr. Hathcock was educated in the public schools of Independence County and graduated from the high school at Sulphur Rock. He attended the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville; and in 1901 he received his medical degree from Vanderbilt Medical School at Nashville, Tennessee. In April 1901, Dr. Hathcock began his practice at Lincoln, Washington County. On November 10, 1902, Dr. Hathcock and Sue R.Kelton were married at Fayetteville. Dr. and Mrs. Hatchcock were the parents of three children, Preston Loyce, Alfred H. and Martha Delle.

Carolyn Hathcock Parsons is the daughter of the Hathcock's older son, Dr. Preston Loyce Hathcock.
