Scope and Content Note

The collection consists of 110 black-and-white 8 x 10 photographic prints of sculptor David Smith and his works. His sculptures are the primary focus of the photographs, but some photographs of works on paper are also included. Many of the photographs are believed to have been taken by David Smith.

Biographical Note

Edgar A. Albin was born December 17, 1908, in Columbus, Ohio. He was an artist, educator, and writer, including of a long-running column for the Springfield Leader and Press. He taught at the University of Arkansas from 1947-1962. He passed away September 25, 1999.

David Smith (1906-1965) was a prominent 20th-century American sculptor, best known for his abstract expressionist works in metal. His works are held in museums and galleries worldwide, include the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, and the Art Institute of Chicago. In 1953, he served as a visiting professor at the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville.

Acquisition Information

The David Smith Photograph Collection was donated to the Special Collections Department by Richard E. Albin and Karalyn Kavanaugh of Rabbit Hash, Kentucky on January 12, 2016. The photographs originally belonged to Albin's father, Edgar A. Albin.
