Scope and Content Note

This collection consists of a diary written by Albert P. Stair from 1861 to 1884. The first part of the diary pertains to his family, military service during the Civil War, and his life after the war. The second portion of the diary was used as an expense ledger. Markings in pen and pencil at the end of the diary, dated 1946, indicate it was written in after Stairs’ death.

Biographical Note

Albert Polk Stair was born on March 27, 1846 in Scott Country, Virginia, the eighth of fourteen children. During the Civil War, Stair fought for the Confederate States Army and was held as a prisoner of war from November 11, 1864 to January 10, 1865. Prior to the end of the war in 1865, Stair returned to Virginia and worked on the family farm. In 1869 he enrolled at a school for vocal music in Bristol, Tennessee and in May 1871 Stair became a preacher for the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, a southern denomination of the Methodist Church that supported slavery. Stair married Elizabeth Partlow on April 13, 1873 and died on April 9, 1900.
