Biographical Note

Roy Franklin Sharp was born on January 29, 1886, to William Franklin and Mary Burilla Wright Sharp, and grew up in Ballinger, Texas. In 1917, Sharp enlisted in the United States Army as an infantry officer. He graduated from First Officer’s Training Camp, located in Leon Springs, Texas, as a 2nd Lieutenant in the 42nd Infantry Division, 167th Infantry Regiment, Company K, also known as the “Rainbow Division.”

On November 6, 1917, Sharp was sent overseas to France. The Rainbow Division was sent to the frontlines in February 1918, and on July 15, 1918 Sharp was badly wounded. After three months at a hospital in France, Sharp was sent back to Newport News, Virginia.

Roy F. Sharp met Mary Sue McCollum, a student at the Southwest Texas State Normal School in San Marcos, Texas, in 1928, and they married on June 30, 1935. The Sharps moved to Corpus Christi, Texas, and had two children, Frank and Mary Ann. In 1944, the family moved to the Ozark Mountains, and purchased a 68-acre area, today known as Mount Kessler, in Fayetteville, Arkansas. Sharp began a meat smoking business in 1946, the Ozark Mountain Smokehouse and was President of the Northwest Arkansas Retired Officers Club. Roy Franklin Sharp died on April 21, 1964.
