Biographical Note

Bunn and Louise Shores Bell lived in Prairie Grove, Washington County, Arkansas. Bunn Bell was born on December 10, 1900 and died on December 17, 1994. He graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville in 1923 and served as assistant business manager for the University from 1942 until 1966. Louise Shores Bell was born on June 23, 1904 and died on April 29, 1997. She also graduated from the University of Arkansas, receiving a masters degree in English in 1926. She taught high school English from 1927-1945 and also served as the principal of Fayetteville High School from 1945-1956.

The couple owned the historic Lake-Shores-Bell House near the Prairie Grove Civil War Battleground. The house was constructed in 1870 by Milton F. Lake, who came to Northwest Arkansas from Kentucky in the 1860s. During the Civil War, the Battle of Prairie Grove took place on portions of the land that Lake had purchased. Lake, a popular politician, served in the state legislature, signed the 1874 Arkansas Constitution, and was a primary contractor in the construction of the University of Arkansas Old Main building. The house was eventually sold in 1932 to John C. Shores who then transferred ownership to his daughter, Louise Bell, and his son-in-law, Bunn Bell. The house was meticulously modernized and well preserved by the Bells during their ownership.
