Biographical Note
Charles L. von Berg was born in Germany and immigrated to the United States with his father at the age of nineteen. Von Berg became a trapper, hunter, and companion to many members of the Sioux tribes. Another friend was "Buffalo" Bill Cody. Von Berg joined the Union during the Civil War and worked as a scout in the Dakota's during the Sioux uprising. He was later sent south and participated in the occupation of Little Rock (Pulaski County), Arkansas. After the war, von Berg resumed his old lifestyle of traveling, hunting, and spending time with his Indian friends. In 1887, von Berg retired to Fayetteville where he spent the rest of his life painting and telling stories of his days as a frontiersman and scout.
