Biographical Note

Bruce Neal Choate was born January 11, 1922 in Yell County Arkansas to Garland and Mamie Lusby Choate. After graduating from Ola High School, Choate moved to Carlsbad, New Mexico to work and study Spanish. While in New Mexico, Choate joined the National Guard at age 18. In 1941, he was sent to the Philippines with General Douglas MacArthur to Fort Stetsenberg, Bataan. In 1942, Choate was reported missing in action, and that summer was later reported as a prisoner of war in a Japanese Prisoner of War camp. Choate was released from the camp and returned to the United States in early 1945. On May 8, 1945, Choate married Retha Maxine McCool of Sheridan, Grant County, Arkansas.
