The Halsey Prudden Correspondence contains biographical information about the Prudden family, and correspondence discussing Arkansas frontier life, and religion. Additional the collection contains two sets of transcribed correspondence; one created by Emma Carmen, Prudden's niece and one provided by Jane Bradford, Prudden's great-great niece.

Biographical Note
Halsey Prudden was born in 1799 in Morristown, New Jersey to Daniel and Phebe Riggs Prudden. Prudden was had two brothers younger brothers Daniel Jr. (1800-1831) and Ludlow (1804-1869). In 1815 after Prudden’s mother had died, his father emigrated to Ohio and Kentucky, taking with him his two elder sons. Ludlow, remained in New Jersey with his aunt Hannah Prudden Howell. Prudden’s father soon married and had two sons, James and Mahlon before his death in 1819. After the death of his father, Prudden left Ohio and came to Saline County, Arkansas to seek a warmer climate because he suffered from severe rheumatism. On March 7, 1833, Prudden married Kaziah Helleam. While in Saline County, Prudden taught school, farmed, became a lay Presbyterian minister, and served as Saline County Judge from 1836-1838.
