Scope and Content Note

The notebooks range from 1923 until 1987, representing over 60 years of a life of varied entrepreneurship in Northwest Arkansas through much of the 20th century, most notably his ventures with a vineyard during the Depression. The contents of this collection, with the exception of Book 3, are authored by and almost exclusively pertain to Beaty himself.

Biographical Note

Martin Elbert Beaty was born on February 10, 1905 in Viney Grove, Washington County, Arkansas. Beaty married Virgie Zinn on June 27, 1926 in Lincoln, Washington County, Arkansas.Virgie Beaty was born on August 9, 1902 in Afton, Texas. After their marriage in 1926, Martin and Virgie Beaty engaged in a series of business ventures. Martin Beaty worked as a freelance carpenter throughout his life and became a mail carrier in 1942. He purchased an apartment house in 1943, which he rented through the 1980s and opened a shop in Prairie Grove by 1969. Virgie died on February 5, 1977 and Martin died in Fayetteville on February 15, 1988. Both are buried in Prairie Grove.
