Biographical Note

The Petentes Women's Club was founded January 24, 1912, by five Little Rock women, led by Mrs. John King. The club was originally organized as a social and literary organization, and a portion of each meeting was devoted to the discussion of an educational topic usually pertaining to literature, history, or current events. The club also participated in civic activities, concentrating on charitable and educational works. Its final meeting was held May 24, 1973.

Acquisition Information

The Petentes Women's Club Records were donated to Special Collections by Ellen Shipley of Fayetteville, Arkansas, on May 15, 1988. Two additional items (a charity benefit ticket and another copy of the 1964-1965 yearbook) were donated circa 1997.
