Biographical Note
Cynthia (born 1844) and Inez (born 1842) Rodes were the daughters of Robert and Sarah Carter Rodes of Giles County, Tennessee. Cynthia married Felix R.R. Smith, a captain in the Confederate Army Corps of Engineers, on November 28, 1863, and settled on an enslaved labor plantation in Heckatoo, Lincoln County, Arkansas. Inez married George Henry Hunt, an Episcopal minister, on June 11, 1868. The couple lived in Nashville, Tennessee, and Birmingham, Alabama.

Acquisition Information
The letters, primarily between Cynthia Rodes Smith and her sister, Inez Rodes Hunt, were purchased by the Special Collections Department from Richard Bazelow of Camden Wyoming, Delaware, on April 9, 2007.
