Scope and Content Note

The collection is comprised of 30 letters sent by both Peter and his wife Rose during the two months that Peter was stationed at Stuttgart. The letters date from April 24, 1944, to June 21, 1944, and reflect the experiences of this New Jersey couple living on a military base in Arkansas.

Biographical Note

Peter Swereda was born in 1920, and grew up in Little Falls, New Jersey. He began his training for the Army Air Force (AAF) in class 44E, training at AAF fields in Cape Girardeau and Malden, Missouri. While there, Swereda married Louise Rose Klewin on November 25, 1943. In April 1944, he was transferred to Stuttgart AAF Field in Stuttgart, Arkansas, to complete his Advanced Air Training. The Army commissioned Stuttgart AAF in 1942 as an advanced training facility for Army Air Force pilots. Peter graduated as a Flight Officer in class 44F in June 1944.
