Biographical Note

The New York Zinc and Lead Company was formed at a meeting of its original stock subscribers in East St. Louis, Illinois, on July 9, 1889. Its principal properties were small mines, including the Bear Hill Mine, in Marion County, Arkansas, eight miles northwest of Yellville. The properties were leased by the company on several occasions, often for milling operations but more frequently for mining ventures. They were finally forfeited to the state of Arkansas in 1941 for nonpayment of taxes.
