Biographical Note

The Burgin Valley School was located in central Benton County, Arkansas, just north of Highfill near Decatur. The school offered classes in grades 1 through 8, all of which were taught by a single teacher, Zelda Chiles. The student body consisted of 48 students who were housed in a building designated in 1931 as a temporary installation. Chiles, who kept attendance and academic records in the register, was born November 24, 1901, in Pea Ridge. She died April 28, 1979, in Pea Ridge and was survived by a brother, W.C. Chiles of California, and a sister, Nell Webb also of Pea Ridge. She is buried in the Pea Ridge Cemetery.

The school was located in Benton County School District No. 45, which consisted of nine square miles. In 1935-36, the nearest year for which statistics are readily available, 67.5 percent of the county’s 98 districts were one-teacher schools. Only five rural schools in the county attempted to teach high school courses that year.
