Scope and Content Note

The collection includes both a bound and an unbound copy of Henry's memoir. The unbound memoir includes an introduction by her son, Thomas Henry. The bound copy includes a compact disc which contains a family tree, electronic copies of the memoir and 275 photographs.

Biographical Note

Lois DuPree Henry was born on September 8, 1906, near England, Lonoke County, Arkansas, to Lula and John Thomas DuPree, a prominent farmer. Lois graduated from England High School in 1924 and began her teaching career there at age 18. On August 6, 1926, she married Oris E. Henry, also a teacher. The couple had one son, Thomas Wood Henry. She later attended Arkansas State Teachers College in Conway, completing her degree in 1961. She also took courses at Arkansas State College, Batesville, and the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville.

Lois taught for over fifty years at several schools in Phillips, Arkansas, Lee, Mississippi, and Jefferson counties. In 1972 she was named one of the outstanding elementary school teachers in America. The following year her husband died. In 1975 she retired from Plaincrest Elementary School in Dollarway, Jefferson County, and moved to Searcy, White County, Arkansas. In 1983, she began writing her memoir, aided by several taped interviews conducted by Thomas Henry. In 1985 she moved to the Denver area to be near her son. She died in Morrison, Colorado, on August 29, 2004.

The Lois DuPree Henry Memoir was donated to the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on August 15, 2005 by Thomas Wood Henry of Laurel, Montana.
