Biographical Note

Company 1750 of the U.S. Civilian Conservation Corps was first occupied November 16, 1933. It had the project number P 63, indicating that it was a project in a private forest. Company 1750 was located within the Hamburg, Arkansas city limits. The Emergency Conservation Work (ECW) Act, more commonly known as the Civilian Conservation Corps, was a project of the Roosevelt New Deal. Roosevelt proposed to recruit thousands of unemployed young men, enroll them in a peacetime army, and send them into battle against destruction and erosion of our natural resources. Senate Bill 5.598 was introduced in March 27, was through both houses of Congress on the President's desk to be signed on March 31, 1933. From FDR's inauguration on March 4, 1933, to the induction of the first enrollee on April 7, only 37 days had elapsed. There were more than one hundred projects in Arkansas.
