Biographical Note
Daniel Phillips Upham was born in Dudley, Massachusetts on December 30, 1832. Upham was educated in the Massachusetts public school system, and married a Massachusetts local named Lizzie. In April 1865, Upham left Massachusetts and arrived in Arkansas. Upham settled in Augusta, Woodruff County, Arkansas where he owned a flourishing store and a cotton plantation. A Republican, he was elected to the Arkansas House of Representatives in 1867. Upham and his family moved to Little Rock in 1869 due to Ku Klux Klan attacks, which plagued much of Eastern Arkansas during Reconstruction. While he was in Little Rock he was a clerk in the Pulaski County Chancery Court, a brigadier general in command of the Seventh District in central Arkansas, and was appointed U.S. marshal for the Western U.S. District Court.
Upham died of Tuberculosis on November 18, 1882, in Dudley, Massachusetts. He is buried in Little Rock's Oakland Cemetery.
Upham was an active politician, businessman, plantation owner, and Arkansas state militia commander during the civil war. He is best remembered for his campaign against the Ku Klux Klan during Reconstruction and the Militia War from 1868-1869.
