Biographical Note
The Election Research Council (ERC) was established on August 9, 1964, to educate members of the public about their rights as voters and to call attention to violations of voting laws. Danforth, a graduate of the University of Arkansas with an M.A. in English, was asked by John H. Haley, founder and chairman of the board of the ERC, to act as its director. Although Danforth was unaware of it, the ERC was funded in part by Republican gubernatorial candidate Winthrop Rockefeller, who was at that time challenging Democratic governor Orval Faubus. The ERC disbanded in 1965.
