Scope and Content Note

The collection consist of correspondence, printed and mimeographed material, newspaper clippings, and notes. Correspondence includes letters between the Y.W.C.A. and Mary Cazort concerning the creation of a Y.W.C.A. program at the Rowher and Jerome American concentration camps. The collection also contains newspaper clippings pertaining to the American concentration camps, including the employment of Japanese American incarcerees on local farms. The collection also includes copies of the Rowher Outpost, an incarceree-run newspaper published from June through August, 1943.

Biographical Note

Mary Cazort was born in Paragould, Greene County, Arkansas, the daughter of Edith and Robert E. Lee Carpenter. She was married to Dr. Alan Garner Cazort (1900-1986), who was born in Lamar, Johnson County, Arkansas. They had four daughters, Mimi, Cecile, Virginia, and Jean. Mary Cazort first visited Rohwer in 1942 with a group of other Little Rock women on behalf of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA), and subsequently worked to establish YWCA programs at the Rohwer and Jerome concentration camps.

Mary Cazort served as the first editor for the Arkansas Gardener, a monthly magazine published by the Arkansas Federation of Garden Clubs. She was a member of Pulaski Heights United Methodist Church, and a board member of the Y.W.C.A. in Arkansas. Mary Cazort passed away on April 14, 1984, in Little Rock, Arkansas.

The Alan and Mary Cazort Papers Related to Japanese American Incarceration in Arkansas were donated to the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on September 13, 2002 by their daughter, Cecile Cazort Zorach of Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
