Scope and Content Note

The Virginia Tidball Papers Addendum contains the writings and journals of Virginia Tidball between the 1940s and the late-1990s. The collection also includes personal notes and correspondence relating to her involvement in the Mildred Lee Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy as well as several scrapbooks which were entrusted to Ms. Tidball after the dissolution of the chapter in the mid-1990s. In addition, the collection contains documents relating to her father, Reverend Charles Tidball, including pamphlets released throughout the 19th century relating to the Presbyterian Church.

Materials include journals, correspondence, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, and scrapbooks.

Biographical Note

Virginia Tidball was born on April 17, 1904 in Charleston, Franklin County, Arkansas to Charles Martin Tidball and Mamie Doby Tidball. She graduated salutatorian of Fayetteville High School in 1922, and went on to earn a bachelors degree with honors from the University of Arkansas in 1926 and a master's degree from University of California in 1929. Focusing on foreign language and English, Tidball taught at El Dorado Junior College between 1930 and 1942; at Denson High School in the Jerome Japanese-American Relocation Center between 1942 and 1944; and at Fort Smith High School/Junior College between 1945 and the early-1950s. She left Fort Smith High School to take care of her mother and two brothers in Fayetteville and became a freelance writer for various publications including the Arkansas Gazette and Christian Observer. Tidball also was a member of Fayetteville's Mildred Lee Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy and held several positions including president and chapter historian during the 1950s and 1960s.

The Virginia Tidball Papers Addendum was purchased by the Special Collections Department, University of Arkansas Libraries, on March 29, 2002 from Frances Tidball Holman of Port Gibson, Mississippi.
