Biographical Note

The League of Women Voters of the United States was established in 1920, the year that woman suffrage was incorporated into the Constitution of the United States. The League was originally part of the National American Woman Suffrage Association which led the seventy-two year drive for full and equal suffrage for women. The League was founded primarily to assist the twenty million newly enfranchised women carry out their new responsibilities and to encourage well-informed citizen participation in government. The Conway League of Women Voters was granted provisional status in April 1975 and granted membership in the League in December 1976. Projects the League has undertaken include a survey of Conway municipal agencies, services and organs of government for public distribution, forums for political candidates for county and local offices, public service radio spots and interviews, financial assistance to the National League of Women Voters for ERA ratification, a local energy survey, involvement in local educational issues, election law reform, the food stamp program, local economic issues, and energy and solid waste management. The Conway League has been active in working for fair elections, good government, and community involvement.
