Historical Sketch

The Marion Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.) is a key part in the Fayetteville community. The Marion Chapter of the D.A.R. was organized on December 9, 1910. It was named in honor of General Francis Marion, who was commissioned Brigadier General of the state troops of South Carolina. The earliest records of the Chapter were lost; however, continuous records exist from September 25, 1915. The Chapter participates in and organizes many American History, American Government, or American patriotism activities in the Fayetteville area. One activity that the Chapter is well known for is the participation in finding and restoring the graves of America Revolutionary War Solders buried in Northwest Arkansas. Another activity that the Chapter took part in was the creation of a city library in Fayetteville in 1916. The Chapter, itself as well as specific members has received various awards from the community, the Arkansas State Society of the D.A.R., and the National Society of the D.A.R.. The Chapter also presents awards to the community. The Good Citizen Award, presented by Chapters of the D.A.R., is presented to high school students that exhibit traits that the chapter finds to benefit the community.
